Our MOVE edition of Screen Social filled The Book Club‘s basement with music, dance and visual delight. We screened a diverse selection of short films exploring the power and magic of dance and movement.

The evening kicked off with an archival short, Tap Hop by SODA_JERK and BKLYN Flex – Episode 1 – Regg by Brooklyn-based filmmakers Deidre Schoo & Michael Beach Nichols. Later in the night, two more films from the BKLYN Flex Project were shown.

A mix of diverse contemporary dance-focused pieces were then screened followed by powerful shorts from a number of directors who were there to support their films. Among them, Renzo Vasquez‘s Shaped & Line, Rogerio Silva‘s Abaddon and Edifice and Ëpha J. Roe‘s Dance to Gnossienne #1 which was inspired by ‘the nature and complication of human relationships’.

Oscar Hudson‘s music video, Gilligan Moss- Choreograph was a highlight of the night – giving us a surreal exploration of the repetitive mundanity of our existence. It captures a teenager in a domestic setting, complete with fried eggs, nagging mothers and booming music. Hudson achieved the footage loops by editing directly in camera. Another great example of his work (co-directed with Spike Morris) is This Way Up, which also screened.

Other films included Masumi Saito & Guy Wigmore‘s Sentry – Station Crucial, James Arden‘s Bull – Jan Finn, Kelpe – Go invisible by Mira Loew and David Altweger and This is not about us – Kindness by Adam Bainbridge and Daniel Brereton, which covered an eclectic mix of genres.

During the second part of the evening, we screened Jacob Sutton‘s awesome  A-Z of Dance and Lil Buck, Adriano Cirulli‘s hypnotic short Falling, Masumi Saito‘s & Guy Wigmore‘s Movement Diaries, two of Jevan Chowdhury‘s Moving Cities series (capturing international dancers in international urban settings), Phillip Kaminiak & Kiani Del Valle‘s Study of Solo ImprovisationMargaret Williams & Jonzi D‘s Dual and explored the power of yoga movement with Ian Derry‘s Felix.

Among the submitted films were Emma Miranda-Moore‘s short documentary Dressing Room 7 – a filmic observation of the backstage life of dancers in a West End show, and Daniel McKenzie-Cossou‘s Ascent and Amnesia.
